What Cultural Leadership Interns have said…
Jessica Lake, UMSL MPPA and MSW Practicum Student
“When I was looking for my MSW practicum and MPPA internship I was looking for organizations with great supervisor as well as organizations with missions that aligned with my interests, namely civil rights and social justice. When I found Cultural Leadership, I found everything that I was looking for. Holly (MPPA) and Maggie (MSW) have provided me with an opportunity to learn from perspectives of both the degrees that I am working toward. Cultural Leadership has also been a great organization to work with to start utilizing the knowledge and skills of my nonprofit management and leadership coursework. As someone who enjoys “standing up, speaking out, and taking action,” it was also great to see how “troublemakers of the best kind” grow and develop. Some of my favorite highlights of my time with Cultural Leadership have been working with and learning from the high school students of Class 9, helping plan and develop Camp Cultural Leadership for middle school students, as well as analyzing and enhancing program evaluation materials to measure and expand upon the effectiveness of the programs. I have also been able to build and enhance skills such as event planning and management, fundraising, budgeting, grant writing, data management and analysis, public speaking, as well as program and organizational marketing.”
Taylor Ingram, John Burroughs School Intern, Cultural Leadership Class 8 Graduate
“As part of Class 8, Cultural Leadership opened my eyes not only to the challenges we face as youth in our world today, but also how to solve those issues. Cultural Leadership motivated me to make a change in my community. I chose to intern with Cultural Leadership because I wanted to give back to an organization that has given me so much. I believe that Cultural Leadership is valuable and creates awareness and motivates youth who will not settle for the world they live in, and will work until the world is a better place for everyone.”
Taylor interned with Cultural Leadership to fulfill her high school community service hours. As an intern, she planned and implemented a community event for high school youth who were interested in meeting other allies in the field of social justice. By utilizing her communication, program-planning, and fundraising skills, Taylor was able to feed and motivate the 25 allies (representing Cultural Leadership, Diversity Awareness Partnership, FOCUS St. Louis, NCCJSTL, and Student to Student) who attended the program.
